About ICON Series

Nothing gives off that unique, so-cool vibe like a guitar that’s obviously seen some serious use. Like a battle-scarred warrior that always gives its best, the instrument’s character shines through the worn finish, saying ‘this guitar has paid its dues’. Its sound has the heart and soul of a thousand gigs in it and you can feel it when you play it. It feels special to hold, and special to play.

But how many people can afford the vintage instrument of their dreams? That special instrument which displays a unique level of wear from decades of playing – at home, numerous rehearsal sessions, smokey pubs to working mens’ clubs, gigs and tours at home and abroad? Or how many guitarists can wait 20 years before their own guitar starts to show that kind of time-related character?

Now you don’t have to wait! You don’t even have to re-mortgage the house to make the payment. Renowned guitar specialists Vintage®, in conjunction with acknowledged guitar guru, Trevor Wilkinson, have a new specially-aged electric guitar range that ticks all the boxes – the Vintage ICON™ Series!

These fantastic guitars, fully equipped with equally aged Wilkinson tuners, hardware and pickups look like they’ve been played for decades with all the marks, wear and tear to prove it. They’ve been through the mill but they’re cool and ready for the next gig.

Get one of the new Vintage ICON™ Series guitars and save 20 years of your life!

Made in the USA….these fine instruments are available at a select range of UK shops…

The concept behind Campbell American Guitars is simple: build guitars in America – using old New England craftsmanship; utilize sensible designs, top-shelf components; and always retain a commitment to quality, integrity and ingenuity. We believe the results of this philosophy speak for themselves.

GUITAR BUYER MAGAZINE: “This Campbell American Caledonian is a great all-rounder, handling rock, blues and even country with ease. This guitar is all about getting genuine tone from quality materials, with no fuss or nonsense. That’s not to say that it’s a’ no-frills’ instrument – the body carve and finish, neck and Fretwork are all of a high quality, and these Lollar pickups are among the best there around. But with little in the way of frills and frippery, this particular Caledonian feels like a guitar that you’ll want to play every day, rather than one you’ll hang on your wall. You can specify your own options, of course, but we like it like that. And, considering the standard of tone and playability, the £1,349 price tag looks like good value.”

GUITAR ONE MAGAZINE: ” If you’re a working musician looking for a custom instrument that sounds and plays as good as any you’ll hear, at a street price rivaling some off-the-rack models, you owe it to yourself to check out the full Campbell line.”

GUITAR BUYER MAGAZINE: “The Nelsonic’s unusual mix of Fender flavours (the scale length and vibrato system) and Gibson influences (the two humbuckers and mahogany body works really well, while still managing to generate the feel of something that’s a bit different from the rest. The sounds and playability are both so good that this guitar feels almost addictive. It’s very hard to put down once you start playing it, and when you grow used to the fact that beneath the quirky image lies an achingly gorgeous and highly usable guitar, there’s almost no going back.”

GUITARIST MAGAZINE: “We really like this Transitone. Clearly, the outline is never going to be to everyone’s taste, but in terms of sheer playability and pro-quality spec, build and dependability, Campbell guitars come highly recommended. Considering the amount of custom options that are available, it’s possible to tweak the basic design to suit your needs and still keep the price competitive when compared with some of the big mass-produced American brands who just don’t have the sheer number of options available.”

GUITAR PLAYER MAGAZINE: “Guitarists who are willing to spend upwards of $2,000 or more on an instrument can choose from a vast playground of excellent boutique, production, and custom models. The Campbells are pricey guitars, but they represent an appropriate measure of care and pride, and the level of quality is commensurate with other models in their price ranges. Perhaps the greatest appeal of the Campbell clan is that each model is so damn fun to play. Their gentle, satin-finished C-profile necks promote oodles of gleeful fretboard gymnastics—a trait confirmed by the smiles of every GP editor who picked one up.”

PREMIER GUITAR MAGAZINE: “This is the second Campbell American model that I have reviewed, and like the previous one, this one manages to magically feel and sound like an old guitar. This is the main thing that breaks the company out of the custom builder crowd; somehow Campbell has figured out a way to make a new guitar have the broken-in feel, and aged sound of a 30 or 40-year-old vintage instrument. Call it voodoo or call it – as he does – “New England craftsmanship,” from the minute I picked up this guitar and plugged it into my Orange Tiny Terror head, it felt like an old friend.”

ROCK GUITAR DAILY WITH TONY CONLEY: “As previously mentioned the guitar was a dream to hold. Both sitting and standing it was in search of a better term, “transparent.” The action and feel of the neck was amazing. This is a guitar you do not want to put down. It has the feel of not so much an expensive sports car as that of a flying saucer. It almost plays itself. Honestly, I can’t remember being this taken by a first play since the first time I played a really right Les Paul through a 100 watt Marshall. But this is a completely different trip. The Transitone is cool, calm, and collected, as subtle as it is beautiful.”

GUITAR BUYER MAGAZINE: “A good measure of a great guitar is if you really don’t want to put it down. In the case of the Precix, I’ve ended up pouring away more cups of cold tea, and being late for more appointments over the weeks that it’s been in my care, than just about the whole of last year. It’s a really compelling instrument, that both plays extremely well and sounds simply remarkable. Most modern styles of music will be well served with it’s collection of fine tones, but classic rock is where it really excels. Big, warm and expressive solos just drip from the Precix fingerboard, and raunchy rhythm patterns hammer out in the sweetest manner – and all with drool-worthy detail and depth….. and for a sensible price too. A future classic? We hope so.”

The latest entry in Planet Wave’s popular pedal tuner line addresses the most common requests we’ve received: A true strobe tuner pedal that can be seen at noon or midnight on any stage. I’ve been using the original TruStrobe on my tech bench for about a year now, and the Chromatic Pedal Tuner on my own pedalboard and that of the guys I tech for.

The new Tru Strobe Pedal Tuner is a mash-up of both…the “guts” of the table top and the body of the stompbox. The LED light have been replaced with an LCD screen with a switchable on/off backlight. The orange background with black numbers and letters is easy to read from every angle an in all lighting conditions. The true strobe nature of the pedal allows extremely accurate on-stage tuning. Simply watch the rotating LCD segments and tune the string until they stop moving. Clock-wise motion means you are flat, counterclockwise means you are sharp. This tuner is accurate to within +/- 0.1 cent.

I had the opportunity to use this tuner in the field recently, when Brian Nutter, guitarist for Keith Urban , added it to his pedalboard for the taping of the CMT Crossroads show with Urban and John Mayer. Brian is fun and challenging to tech for because he started out in this organization …as Keith’s tech! He loved the tuner and I ended up leaving it on his board even thought it was my only sample at the time. Not only is it an accurate and easy to use tuner, but it looks great doing it. The black chrome housing is stylish and unobtrusive and takes up minimal space on your board.

Standard 9v battery power and AC input jacks, including a daisy-chain output to power more pedals. The Tru Srobe pedal is also true bypass.

A great addition to your onstage rig, this pedal is accurate enough to be your ONLY tuner…at the gig, on the work bench and in the studio.

In addition to the proprietary compounds, Ikon Customs also builds bodies using other materials such as fiberglass, carbon fiber and Kevlar.

Amp basics: What’s the difference between gain and volume?

Asking many guitarists and bassists what the difference between gain and volume is—or even just asking what gain is—is a little like asking people whose picture is on a $10 bill.

Nobody knows. Or very few, anyway.

People handle $10 bills all the time, and yet most are hard-pressed to say whose picture is on them*. Similarly, guitarists and bassists use gain all the time, yet many would be hard-pressed to tell you clearly and correctly what gain is, exactly, and how it relates to volume. Granted, you needn’t be able to define “gain” in order to use it—you just know you turn that knob and something cool happens to your sound; usually something to do with distortion.

That’s perfectly OK, but if you’re new to amps—more specifically, new to buying an amp—it might help to know what gain is and how it’s related to volume, as the two are closely related.

Some amp basics are in order first. A guitar amp can be thought of as a device that has two stages. A relatively weak signal goes from your instrument into the first stage, where it is processed and handed to the second stage, which boosts it into a strong signal—the sound that then comes out of the speakers and rocks the Casbah.

What’s the difference here?

That first stage is the preamp stage. On some amps, you can control the level or strength of the signal sent through this first stage; this control is called “gain” (also often labeled as “drive”). Gain can be thought of as the input volume to the preamp stage (gain adjustments can produce changes in overall volume, which might account for some of the confusion between the terms), although it’s more of a tone control than a volume control. Your gain setting determines how hard you’re driving the preamp section of your amp. Setting the gain control sets the level of distortion in your tone, regardless of how loud the final volume is set.

What this means is that your gain setting determines how clean or dirty your sound is regardless of the master volume setting. You can set the gain high for a dirty tone, but set the overall volume of that dirty tone from near silent to near deafening using the master volume control.

Master volume is an entirely separate entity that lives in the second stage of your amp, the power amp section. It provides the muscle. Think of it this way: the preamp (and gain control) provides the shape of the sound; the power amp provides the overall strength of the sound.

In amps with only a single volume control (and no gain control), that volume control is usually placed early in the signal path—in the preamp stage—thus controlling both volume and gain.
