Brian
May (b. 19 July 1947, Twickenham, Middlesex, England;
guitar) and Roger Taylor (b. Roger Meddows-Taylor, 26
July 1949, Kings Lynn, Norfolk, England; drums) had
been playing in Johnny Quale And The Reactions, Beat
Unlimited and a college group called Smile with bass
player Tim Staffell. When the latter left to join Humpty
Bong (featuring former Bee Gees drummer Colin Petersen),
May and Taylor elected to form a new band with vocalist
Freddie Mercury (b. Frederick Bulsara, 5 September 1946,
Zanzibar, Africa, d. 24 November 1991, London, England).
Early
in 1971 bass player John Deacon (b. 19 August 1951,
Oadby, Leicestershire, England) completed the line-up.
Queen were signed to EMI Records late in 1972 and
launched the following spring with a gig at London's
Marquee club. Soon after the failed single, "Keep
Yourself Alive", they issued a self-titled album,
which was an interesting fusion of 70s glam and late
60s heavy rock (it had been preceded by a Mercury
"solo" single, a cover of the Beach Boys'
"I Can Hear Music", credited to Larry Lurex).
Queen toured extensively and recorded a second album,
which fulfilled their early promise by reaching the
UK Top 5. Soon afterwards, "Seven Seas Of Rhye"
gave them their first hit single (UK number 10), while
Sheer Heart Attack consolidated their commercial standing
by reaching number 2 in the UK album charts. "Killer
Queen" from the album was also the band's first
US hit, reaching number 12 in May 1975.
The
pomp and circumstance of Queen's recordings and live
act were embodied in the outrageously camp theatrics
of the satin-clad Mercury, who was swiftly emerging
as one of rock's most notable showmen during the mid-70s.
1975 was to prove a watershed in the group's career.
After touring the Far East, they entered the studio
with their producer Roy Thomas Baker and completed
the epic "Bohemian Rhapsody", in which Mercury
succeeded in transforming a seven-minute single into
a mini-opera. The track was both startling and unique
in pop and dominated the Christmas charts in the UK,
remaining at number 1 for an astonishing nine weeks.
The power of the single was reinforced by an elaborate
video production, highly innovative for its period
and later much copied by other acts. An attendant
album named after a Marx Brothers movie, A Night At
The Opera, was one of the most expensive and expansive
albums of its period and lodged at number 1 in the
UK, as well as hitting the US Top 5. Queen were now
aspiring to the superstar bracket. Their career thereafter
was a carefully marketed succession of hit singles,
annual albums and extravagantly produced stage
shows.

What
once seemed Queen's greatest liabilities--a preening
flamboyance and pompous, overwrought theatricality--have
ironically become their most enduring charms in a grey,
postmodern pop-music landscape. While it eschews the
glammy, pre-punk hard rock of live faves such as "Stone
Cold Crazy" and "Tie Your Mother Down"
for the band's more quirky club-beat string of latter-day
hits , this 51-track triple-CD anthology goes a long
way toward documenting the true dimensions of the band's
music and fame. It even includes some solo work by Brian
May and Freddie Mercury, whose duet on "Barcelona"
with diva Montserrat Caballé transcends boundaries
of both time and genre. A previously unreleased live
performance of "The Show Must Go On" featuring
Elton John on vocals is also included.

Queen
- The DVD Collection: Live At Wembley Stadium (Two Disc

A
complete concert of one of the best bands live, Queen
Live at Wembley Stadium is the record of one remarkable
summer night in 1986. This really was history in the
making: no-one, except possibly Freddie Mercury, could
have guessed that the band would only ever play two
more concerts in the UK and would never return to Wembley.
Director Gavin Taylor's omnipresent cameras, including
stunning aerial views, also remind us of the glories
of the now-defunct stadium and its signature towers,
such a perfect venue for Queen's epic staging, with
their massive video screen and dazzling light show.
The
second night playing to a capacity crowd saw the band
at the peak of their form, riding high on the popular
success of their recent string of hits: "A Kind
of Magic", "I Want to Break Free", "Radio
Ga Ga" and "One Vision" all feature here
alongside earlier favourites from "Seven Seas of
Rhye" through "Bohemian Rhapsody" and
"We Will Rock You" to "Another One Bites
the Dust" and "Under Pressure". In short,
a veritable greatest hits collection--all performed
with larger-than-life gusto, boundless exuberance and
impeccable musicianship. In a period when most new bands
were content to mime along to weedy synthesised backing
tracks, Queen were simply bigger, bolder and a whole
lot more fun than anyone else. Freddie Mercury's extraordinary
stage presence is likely to remain forever unsurpassed.
On
the DVD: Queen Live at Wembley Stadium is a superb memento
of this memorable night. Disc 1 contains the entire
Saturday gig (almost two hours) remastered in vivid
DTS 5.1 or PCM Stereo. The second disc collects both
contemporary and brand-new material, including new interviews
with Brian May and Roger Taylor. "A Beautiful Day"
is a good documentary made at the time. More exciting
is the wealth of unseen footage, both from the Friday
night show and the band in rehearsal. There are "Queen
Cam" views of each band member, and a photo gallery.
Most poignant is a time-lapse short, "Wembley Towers",
showing the philistine destruction of these national
monuments. It's a fitting epitaph for this great live
band. --Mark Walker
